A Gingham Dress, Vintage Dreams and Fields of Green

To me, nothing represents summer more than gingham. Whenever I see it, no matter the color, I’m drawn to the thought of a picnic in the park. Naturally, I wanted to bask in the sun while pecking at cheese and crackers when I laid my eyes on this adorable Ellen Gingham Sun Dress from Joanie Clothing. So I packed a basket and headed to my local park to flaunt this dress in it’s natural habitat.

Joanie’s motto, “pretty clothes for nostalgic souls” could not be more accurate. Based out of the U.K., this quirky clothing company was inspired by its creator’s great aunt Joanie, whose sense of style and fervor for life comes through with every piece they make. Joanie Clothing prides itself on creating modern takes on timeless pieces, while promoting self confidence in women of all shapes and sizes.

The Ellen Gingham Sun Dress is the perfect example of how Joanie Clothing adds a vintage feel to modern garments. At first glance this dress reminds me of a casual mid-50s Short Evening Gown. The shoulders and neckline of these dresses varied from thick, vertical straps to off-the-shoulder. From there, the bodice would shape to the waist and transition outward into a full skirt that fell at or just below the knees.

This pieces also grabs inspiration from the 1950s Summer Dress, with a design that highlights both the shoulders and the back. But the Ellen Gingham Sun Dress also transitions perfectly into today’s ever-changing designs. The crisscrossed back and buttons down the entirety of the front dress stray from the traditional designs of the mid-century, but showcase the versatility of the combination of old and new dress patterns.

The Ellen Gingham Sun Dress comes in sizes UK 8-22 and provides some stretch around the waist, but be sure to check Joanie’s size chart. I’m wearing a UK 12, or a US M, and generally range between a UK 10-12. For reference, my measurements are 36″ bust and 28″ waist.

It’s made from 100% cotton which makes it extremely comfortable and easy to wash, but be sure to let it hang dry to prevent it from shrinking. As mentioned above, the waistline does provide some stretch, making it a great dress for extended wear.

Within the U.K. shipping is £4 or free with a purchase of £60 or more. Joanie also delivers internationally for £7 to Europe and £9 to the U.S with a delivery time of 3-12 days depending on your location.

In the end, this dress is extremely versatile and absolutely darling.
